Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

New Jersey cemeteries handle footstones differently. Some permit a headstone at the head and a footstone at the foot as a standard configuration; others restrict each grave to a single marker and do not allow footstones at all. Among those that permit footstones, dimension limits vary — the maximum allowed width, length, and above-grade height differ from cemetery to cemetery. Footstone Memorials's process for every footstone commission begins with a direct inquiry to the cemetery office to confirm whether footstones are permitted and what the current requirements are. This step cannot be skipped, and we do not begin fabrication until the cemetery's policy is confirmed.

Foundation Requirements

Even small footstones require concrete foundations in New Jersey. The freeze-thaw cycles of NJ winters create ground pressure that will shift an unanchored stone over time, regardless of its size. Most NJ cemeteries require foundations reaching below the frost line — typically 36 inches in northern counties — for any marker installed at grade. Footstone Memorials's installation team prepares the foundation for each footstone as part of our complete installation service. Families do not need to manage foundation work separately; it is included in our process.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

At denominational cemeteries — Catholic, Jewish, Eastern Orthodox, and others across NJ — footstone requirements may carry additional nuances. Some faith cemeteries restrict footstones to initials only; others permit a small religious symbol but no decorative imagery. Our team contacts the relevant cemetery office to confirm these requirements before designing the footstone, so what we produce reflects both the family's intention and the cemetery's permission.

Footstone / Foot Marker

A footstone for a grave is a small granite marker placed at the foot end of the burial site, opposite the larger headstone at the head. Its inscription is typically brief: initials, a first name, a word or short phrase, or a small symbolic element. Families sometimes use footstones to add information or sentiment the primary headstone does not carry — a second language inscription, a childhood nickname, a small hand-carved symbol meaningful to the family. Footstone Memorials produces footstones for graves in American-made granite, hand-carved in our Morris County, NJ workshop. The granite varieties available for footstones include Absolute Black, Silver Gray, Balmoral Red, and others — and we can match the granite of an existing headstone, even one produced by another company, when requested. Footstones are cut to the maximum dimensions permitted by the receiving cemetery, polished on the top face, and hand-carved with the approved inscription. As veteran and military marker specialists, we also produce footstones for veterans' graves, sized and designed to complement both the primary headstone and any VA-provided marker at the site.

Granite Options

Granite footstones from Footstone Memorials are cut from American-made stone selected to complement or match the primary grave marker. Absolute Black granite is the most commonly requested variety for footstones because the dark background provides strong contrast with hand-carved or engraved lettering at even the small scale of a footstone inscription. Silver Gray offers a softer visual tone. Matching granite to an existing headstone requires comparing the existing stone's color, grain, and finish — our artisans assess this during the consultation, and many families bring photographs or measurements of the primary marker. All footstone granite is sourced domestically. Edge profiles are typically sawn or polished depending on the cemetery's preference or the family's aesthetic intention.

Custom Design Process

A footstone design consultation at Footstone Memorials is a brief but careful conversation. We confirm the inscription, review photographs or measurements of the primary headstone if the family wants a matched granite, verify the cemetery's footstone requirements, and produce a scaled proof of the footstone layout. The proof is approved by the family before any fabrication begins. Consultations are available at our Morris County showroom in person or by telephone in English, Russian, or Polish. The finished footstone is installed at the cemetery by our team, with all foundation work included in the installation service.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Step one is consultation. We meet with the family at our Morris County, NJ showroom or by telephone in English, Russian, or Polish, discussing the inscription, the primary headstone's granite (if a match is needed), and the cemetery. Step two is cemetery verification. We contact the cemetery office to confirm that footstones are permitted, their maximum allowed dimensions, and any material or inscription restrictions. Step three is the design proof. A scaled layout is prepared for family review and approval. Because footstones are small, the proof is carefully checked for legibility at the reduced scale. No fabrication begins until the family approves. Step four is fabrication. The approved footstone is cut from American-made granite in our Morris County workshop and hand-carved by our artisans. At this small scale, hand-tooled lettering is especially important for clarity and durability. Step five is quality review. The finished footstone is compared against the approved proof and inspected for dimension accuracy and lettering quality. Over 80 years of hand-crafted grave markers inform this standard. Step six is installation. Our team delivers the footstone to the cemetery, prepares the concrete foundation, and installs the piece level at the foot of the grave.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a grave markers?

Footstones typically follow a six-to-ten-week timeline from design approval to installation. The process — consultation, cemetery verification, design proof, fabrication, installation — is the same as for any other marker we produce. We confirm a specific estimate at the outset of each project.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. Footstone Memorials serves cemeteries in all 14 NJ counties. For footstones specifically, our first action is always to verify that the receiving cemetery permits footstones and to confirm the maximum allowable dimensions before we design or fabricate anything.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Yes. Footstones from Footstone Memorials are designed to the specific requirements of the receiving cemetery — confirmed directly with the cemetery office before fabrication begins.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Yes. While footstone inscriptions are typically brief, small imagery — initials styled as a monogram, a simple religious symbol, a small carved motif — can be included where the cemetery permits. We produce a scaled proof showing how the imagery will appear at the footstone's dimensions before carving begins.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. As veteran and military marker specialists, Footstone Memorials produces footstones for veterans' graves. We design these to complement both the primary headstone and any VA-provided marker at the site, and we coordinate placement with NJ veterans' cemetery offices directly.

What languages do you serve families in?

Yes — English, Russian, and Polish.
